T-Mobile’s 5G network coverage reaches 200 million people

T-Mobile announced Monday that its “Ultra Capacity” 5G network covers more than 200 million people in the United States, a goal the company originally planned to achieve by the end of 2021.

Referred to by the company as “faster than 5G Wi-Fi,” Ultra Capacity 5G is based on the 2.5 GHz mid-band spectrum and offers users with compatible phones much faster data connectivity speeds than those offered by 4G LTE. .

T-Mobile adds that its extended range 5G network, which relies on low-bandwidth spectrum to provide more robust, but relatively slower connectivity options than Ultra Capacity 5G, now covers 308 million out of 1.7 million people. of square miles.

As noted by The Verge, T-Mobile’s coverage statistics are theoretical, as the company reported just over 100 million subscribers at the end of 2020.

However, the launch is impressive given the results of a recent Opensignal study found T-Mobile’s 5G network will be the fastest and most widely available in the U.S. Part of that availability is an industry focus on deploying fast midband and mmWave technologies in urban centers and metropolitan areas.

Competitors Verizon and AT&T are working to bring their 5G networks online nationwide, but progress has been slow. Both companies have turned to mmWave as the backbone for their fast 5G networks, a technology that requires more resources to implement than sub-6GHz networks. Verizon and AT&T took a hit this month when they decided to postpone the implementation of the C-band spectrum, a taste of the mid-band spectrum, when the Federal Aviation Administration determined that the use of bands could interfere with aircraft communications.
