Air ticket prices from the popular flight destinations of Kisumu and Mombasa have dropped significantly after a long vacation that had raised them to more than 10,000 shillings for a one-way ticket due to high demand.

A single ticket from Mombasa to Nairobi cost 14,125 shillings on Kenya Airways and 14,100 shillings on Jambojet.

Jambojet is charging Sh5,100 and the national operator Sh7,835 for those who book today. This follows a decline in demand seen Monday and Tuesday mornings as commuters returned to the city after the long weekend.

Kenyans returned to work on Tuesday after Monday was declared a holiday after Utamaduni Day celebrations on October 10, which fell on Sunday.

The high demand was due to passengers rushing back to the city at the last minute after a long vacation.

Ideally, tickets for these routes on a normal day would cost around Sh6,000 on average, with the exception of weekends when they tend to go up to around Sh8,000.

By Monday, nearly all airlines had sold out morning flights leaving passengers with an alternative to overnight reservations.

Kisumu is one of the popular routes in the country with a high number of passengers with airlines that have more than four flights on the route. But prices have also dropped en route due to low demand.

For example, starting today (Thursday) the ticket price will be as low as Sh5,100 for those who book Jambojet from the lakeside city to Nairobi.
