Sputnik is live from Cornwall, UK, where members of the Extinction Rebellion environmental movement are gathering for a rally in the town of St Ives as the G7 Summit begins on June 11. Activists are expected to march through the city, calling for more climate justice and protesting against governments’ inaction on climate issues.
According to the movement’s official website, a series of massive actions will take place over the weekend.
The organization was founded in 2018 in the UK, and has been described by activists as a politically non-partisan international movement that uses non-violent direct action to persuade governments to act justly in the climate and ecological emergency. In 2019, its members paralyzed central London and other major UK cities with widespread demonstrations. The movement has not been on the streets since the first COVID-19 closure measures were imposed in March 2020. However, in September they met for several days in front of the British Parliament to request the approval of a Bill of Emergency and Climate.
